Non Lo So
February 18 - March 12, 2005
- Unn Fahlstrøm (NO)

0047 is proud to present Unn Fahlstrøm, in this exhibition curated by Elisabeth Byre. Unn Fahlstrøm works with video, constructing fascinating and subtle atmospheres with an unique way of editing. By using footage from already existing masterpieces, like Scorcese´s "Raging Bull", Antonioni´s "L´eclisse" and Truffaut´s "Les 400 coups", Fahlstrøm samples different scenes in a highly innovative way, interpreting her own versions of the stories. She collaborates with composers and musicians, and the special relationship between content and structure, sound and image, places her work on the border between cinematic narrative and abstract structuralism.
The exhibition presents two video works, Non lo so and Hundre Runder, as well as two stills.
Non lo so - meaning "I don´t know" in Italian - samples footage from Michelangelo Antonioni´s black and white movie "L´eclisse" (from 1962), starring the famous actress Monica Vitti. The samples are collected from the movie´s introduction where a woman is about to break out of a relationship. By revealing the shots in short glimpses and masking the screen with black horizontal parts, Fahlstrøm is teasing the viewer by holding back information. We get the feeling of looking at the couple behind shades, like secret voyeurs. Her deconstruction of the movie is forcing us to fill the gaps of information ourselves - to create a new story and a new meaning, like a postmodern riddle without an answer. The music is sampled and composed by Ignas Krunglevicius, its seductive and melancholic rhythm interacting dynamically with the pictures.
In the video Hundre runder - meaning "a hundred rounds" in Norwegian - Fahlstrøm samples from the movie Les 400 coups by François Truffaut (from 1959). The technique is very much the same as in Non lo so, but the notion which it reveals is quite different. While Non lo so is focusing on lack of communication between adults, this video is taking the viewer on a merry-go-round in a child´s world, making the viewer dizzy with its multiple layers of pictures. Also here, the music is made by Ignas Krunglevicius. There is a beautiful symbiosis between the rhythm of the editing and the rhythm of the music, with an almost hypnotizing effect on the spectator. Hundre Runder was bought by The Norwegian Board of Culture.
Unn Fahlstrøm (born 1975) graduated from The National Academy of Fine Art in Oslo last year, and has already gained a lot of attention. She has received several art awards for her videos. This is her first show in Germany.
