From October 7 to November 6, 2011 0047 presents Stone from Strange Mountain, a project by artists Ulrika Gomm and Lina Persson. The exhibition introduces mining - a human activity at the core of modern civilization – as a mirror to mechanisms of economical and political control within industrial capitalism.
Stone from Strange Mountain exhibits camera-based works that introduce the uses of geological entities as historical documents to the ways control and authority act within specific localities. For example, Persson’s Boulder Eclipse focuses on the ore specimens in the archives of the Swedish Museum of Natural History, while Colonizing Futures tells the story of how space exploration was used as a metaphor for Millionprogrammet - the ambitious housing program implemented in Sweden between 1965 and 1974. Both Gomm's Fakultät and Persson's Mountain Story derive from Teufelsberg - an artificial hill outside Berlin with a curious history connected to the Second World War. While Gomm delves deeply into the architecture of what once stood there, Persson pans through a collage of different layers of sediment, ruins and rubble.
Stone from Strange Mountain unearths layers of visual information, bringing forth geographical, geological, architectural and historical connections to create speculative narration with image, text and sound.
